Homes with Purpose started with a small church with a big dream.
Barton Community Church, on an estate in Oxford, had a vision to have their own house. Which for a church of a few dozen people seemed an extravagant dream. But when a property came up for auction in the estate, they felt led to pursue it. It was a long shot - but it was worth a shot.
Within a week, over £400,000 was offered in loans and donations from ordinary Christian lenders, lending from £5,000 up.
And so Homes with Purpose was set up as a charity, taking on two houses in Barton - one for the church as a manse for the minister to live in the estate, and one that's leased to Edge Housing to provide a home for men who would otherwise be homeless.
It's a model that's scalable, so when a few months later the Taliban stormed across Afghanistan, more than 50 lenders stepped forward to lend the funds needed to buy two houses for Afghan refugee families fleeing the conflict.
